Terms of Service
Last updated 5 November 2026 · Effective 7 October 2026
These terms govern your use of Roost (“Roost”, “we”, “us”). By creating an account or using the app you agree to them. If you don't agree, don't use Roost. How we handle data is explained in our Privacy Policy.
1. Who may use Roost
- You must be at least 18 and legally an adult where you live.
- You must be the parent or legal guardian of every child whose phone you link to Roost, and that child must be under 18, or you must otherwise have lawful authority over that phone.
- You are responsible for telling your child that their phone is monitored. Roost is built so this can't be hidden.
Roost may not be used to monitor another adult, an employee, a partner, or anyone whose phone you don't have lawful authority over. Doing so may be a crime. We will close accounts used this way.
2. Your legal responsibility
Laws on monitoring communications differ widely between countries and US states, and some require the consent of everyone in a conversation. You alone are responsible for making sure your use of Roost is lawful where you live. We don't give legal advice, and nothing in the app or on this site is legal advice.
3. What Roost doesn't promise
Roost helps a parent and child talk about what happens online. It is not a substitute for supervision, and it is not an emergency service.
- It will miss things. Message checking is automated and imperfect. It can't read tone, context, sarcasm, slang it hasn't seen, images, voice notes, or anything that never appeared as a notification on the phone.
- It will flag things that are harmless. A song lyric or a joke can trigger an alert.
- It depends on the phone. If the child's phone is off, offline, out of battery, has permissions removed, or has Roost restricted by the manufacturer's battery settings, nothing is reported and rules may not apply.
- It can be worked around by a determined user, for example by turning off notification previews or using another device.
- Filters aren't perfect. Website categories come from lists that can be incomplete or wrong, so some sites may be blocked or allowed by mistake.
- Location can be wrong or late, depending on signal, settings and battery.
Never rely on Roost in an emergency. SOS alerts go to you as a parent, not to the emergency services. If you believe a child is in danger, contact your local emergency number.
4. Your account
- Keep your password confidential; you are responsible for what happens under your account.
- Give accurate information and keep it up to date.
- Tell us promptly at support@roostfamily.online if you think your account has been compromised.
5. Uninstall protection and your device code
On a child's Android phone you can turn on uninstall protection, so Roost can't be removed until it is switched off. Android always lets it be switched off in Settings; if it is, you'll be told, unless your child used a device code you gave them. Keep your device code private and set a new one if it gets out. You must not use uninstall protection on a phone you don't have authority over.
6. Subscriptions
Roost is free to use with its core features. Roost Premium is an optional subscription that adds more, as described in the app before you buy.
- Billing. Premium is sold through Google Play or the Apple App Store and charged to your store account when you confirm the purchase. The price, and how often you pay, are shown before you buy.
- Automatic renewal. Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each period, at the then-current price, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends. Your store account is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends.
- Cancelling. Manage or cancel in your Google Play or App Store account settings. Cancelling stops the next renewal; Premium stays on until the end of the period you've paid for. Deleting the app or your account doesn't cancel a subscription by itself.
- Free trials. If an offer includes a free trial, any unused part of it ends when you buy a subscription. If you don't cancel before the trial ends, it turns into a paid subscription.
- Refunds. Purchases are handled by Google or Apple, so refunds follow their policies, and we can't issue them directly. Nothing here affects any right to a refund you have under the law.
- Price changes. If the price changes, you'll be told in advance as your store requires, and you can cancel before it applies.
- Restoring. If you reinstall Roost or change phones, use Restore purchases in the app.
7. Other services
Some features rely on services we don't run, such as Google Firebase, Google Play services, Apple's Screen Time, map providers, and Cloudflare for Families for home network filtering. Their availability isn't under our control, and your use of them may be subject to their own terms. Home network filtering works by changing settings on your own router or device; you are responsible for those settings, and you can undo them at any time.
8. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use Roost to monitor anyone you aren't legally entitled to monitor;
- try to hide Roost from the person using the monitored phone;
- use Roost to harass, stalk, control or intimidate anyone;
- interfere with the service, or try to reach data belonging to another family;
- copy, change, reverse engineer, resell or redistribute the app, except where the law doesn't allow this restriction.
9. Your licence to use Roost
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Roost on phones you own or control, for your family, under these terms. We and our licensors keep all rights in the app, its design, content and name. We may end this licence if you break these terms.
10. Changes to Roost
We may change, suspend or stop any part of Roost. We will give reasonable notice of significant changes where we can. Features on this site may change, and some depend on your phone and its operating system.
11. Ending your use
You may stop using Roost and delete your account at any time in the app; see Delete your account. Deleting the account removes your family's data as described in the Privacy Policy. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, in particular sections 1 and 8.
12. Disclaimers and liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Roost is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. We are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss, or for any harm arising from an alert that was not raised, was raised late, or was raised in error. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid for Roost in the 12 months before the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Some places don't allow certain exclusions, so parts of this section may not apply to you. Nothing here affects your rights as a consumer under the law.
13. If you got Roost from the App Store
If you downloaded Roost from Apple's App Store, these terms also apply:
- These terms are between you and us, not Apple. We, not Apple, are responsible for Roost and its content.
- Your licence is limited to using Roost on Apple-branded products you own or control, as the App Store's Usage Rules allow, including through Family Sharing.
- Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support for Roost.
- If Roost fails to meet any warranty that applies, you may tell Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price, if any. To the fullest extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for Roost.
- Apple isn't responsible for any claims about Roost, including product liability claims, claims that Roost fails to meet a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims under consumer protection, privacy or similar law.
- If anyone claims that Roost or your use of it infringes their intellectual property, we, not Apple, are responsible for investigating, defending, settling and discharging the claim.
- You confirm you aren't in a country subject to a US government embargo or designated as supporting terrorism, and aren't on any US government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- You must follow any third-party terms that apply when using Roost, such as your mobile network's terms.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms, and once you accept them, Apple may enforce them against you.
14. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India, and the courts of India have exclusive jurisdiction, except where the law of the country you live in gives you the right to bring proceedings there or to rely on its consumer protections.
15. Changes to these terms
If we change these terms in a meaningful way, we will update the date above and tell account holders in the app before the change takes effect. If you keep using Roost after that, the new terms apply.
